Low-E Glass

Low-e glass is produced by vacuum sputtering layers of coatings, including one or two layers of silver on glass. silver is the material with lowest emissivity which is a measure of a material's ability to radiate energy. ordinary clear glass has a surface emissivity level of 0.84, meaning 90% of the absorbed heat is emitted from the surface. when low-e coatings are applied to glass, the surface emissivity is reduced to less than 0.1.

Low-e coatings reflect invisible long-wave infrared energy, reducing heat gain or loss in a building by redirecting the heat. low-e products have the best balance between visible light transmission and solar energy control. compared to normal solar reflective coatings, low-e has the characteristic of higher visible light transmission. a low-e product ensures warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer at the same energy consumption levels. syp's low-e coatings have excellent energy-saving performance and will increase your buildings' value by decreasing energy consumption. today's investment will bring tomorrow's return.

Why do I need to use a low-E glass?

Government Building Regulations require us to save energy, to help protect the environment. Using low-E glass is the most efficient way of doing this with glazing. This also provides benefits to you as a property owner as money can be saved on heating bills as heat loss is reduced by a massive 75% compared to single glazing and at least 40% compared to traditional double glazing. Rooms are also more comfortable as cold spots near windows and drafts are reduced. Finally unsightly condensation on the inside of the glass is reduced beacuse the temperature of the interior pane is kept closer to room temperature.

Will using a low-e glass cut down on my energy bills?

Low-E is designed to reflect heat back into a room, therforere reducing heat loss. By using a low-E glass in your windows your home will be better insulated, thus reducing your requirement for additonal heating.

I have been told that I need to use a 'low-E' glass in my home, what does this mean and is it far more expensive?

A low-E glass is a glass with a special coating designed to reflect heat back into the room, thus reducing heat loss. The extent to which low-Eglass reduces heat loss is measured by the U-value, the lower the U-value the better the thermal insulation. You are required to have a low-E glass in your windows to comply with the latest Building Regulations. These new regulations have been introduced to reduce CO2 emissions associated with heating.
